Here is one of the good study tips if math is involved: Instead of using a large number of problems where one equation is used, make a problem list where many equations have to be considered. By approaching the subject matter from different angles, it is as though your brain will benefit from multiple “anchor” points – another vantage point to “tie the material down” from.
EAT SOMETHING, YOU’LL FEEL BETTER!
Seriously, some of us just do NOT function without a steady stream of calories to maintain blood sugar levels. Are you one of us? Everyone reacts differently to various foods. Some students can always count on yogurt and fresh fruit for a gentle, long-lasting boost of mental energy. Your brain uses a large percentage of your total energy output, so make sure you feed yourself well on exam day.
Here is one of those good study tips that most students overlook. The brain turns off without enough water and electrolytes. Not tea. Not any kind of juice. Water. Pure water with some minerals. The amazing thing is that dehydration feels so similar to hunger that many people mistake one for the other, and eat when they should actually hydrate. Think of it this way: Nothing in our body works without small but crucial amounts of electricity. Water and minerals enable electric circuits to remain open. That is a good study tip to remember on exam day.
SLEEP ON IT
End the day before an exam by studying the material just before bed. I am not going to go so far as to tell you to sleep with your study guide under your pillow, but it doesn’t hurt to make your exam material the last subject you cover before sleep. Again, the first and last of the good study tips: don’t do all-nighters! They are emergency techniques only, and affect your brain waves in a negative way for hours or even days later.
Start early and DON’T stay up late when it comes to studying. Build your study plan, follow through, and find some study buddies. If you’re like most of us, you might want to find a good study guide to help you along the way. Any list of good study tips should include attention to how you use your time. Remember that the best students seem to have a built-in habit of good time management. Make a note of good students you know and model their habits. Unless they do it all the night before…:)
